Something that I started with my kids a few weeks ago were these "unfinished work" folders. I do not like my kids ever feeling pressured or rushed or stressed out about their work. We are working on "quality 5th grade work" right now and only turning in our best efforts. I Velcro-ed these folders to the front of every student's desk to put work in that is unfinished. Whenever there is down time, they know they are to pull out their unfinished work and complete it. If not done by Friday, they get a slip and take it home over the weekend to finish and bring back Monday.
Meet JiJi the penguin! Today, we started ST Math and I could not be more excited about it! This program is AWESOME and its effectiveness is backed up by TONS of reliable research. It is an online mathematics program that is designed to boost math comprehension and proficiency through visual learning. There are no words or written directions/explanations for solving problems. This program is designed to be a supplemental resource to assist in the common core teachings of mathematics. Check out their website and be sure to ask your child about how cool this program is:)
ST Math: www.mindresearch.net/stmath/ After place value, we learned about the different math properties. These properties help us to solve math problems more easily as well as make them easier to solve mentally.
Commutative Property- our numbers COMMUTE, or move around, to rearrange our order. Associative Property- Our parenthesis ASSOCIATE different groups of numbers together. Their placement doesn't move- the parenthesis do. Distributive Property- Our DISTRIBUTIVE DOCTOR chops up our number into other numbers that are easier to use mental math to solve. Identity Property- Our numbers stay true to themselves! They keep their identity. Here are your children doing a math review game on the properties. They could take on anyone in a math properties battle ;) |
